Tanglewood’s 75th anniversary season should be nothing short of sensational. That’s why we’re telling you about it now. You’re going to want to make plans for some sensational mid-summer music.

Set in the sublime Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, Tanglewood is the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summertime home. It’s a singular place – one to which generations of musicians have come to perform, and audiences journeyed to be renewed. This year’s season runs June 22 – Sept. 2.

Highlights of the festival’s three-quarter century quest for continuing excellence include James Taylor and his extraordinary group of musicians. This is a must-see. Believe it. Taylor holds court July 2, 3 and 4 – with fireworks following his Independence Day performance.

A pair of star-studded galas on July 14 and August 18 frame Tanglewood’s 75th season nicely. July 14 the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood Music Center orchestras let loose. Look for the likes of Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Peter Serkin – and James Taylor. And that’s not the whole roster. Making the event even more special is that it’s when renowned composer John William’s 80th birthday will be celebrated. Among his compositions are the musical scores for Star Wars, Shindler’s List, and the first trio of Harry Potter films.

If you can’t be there in person (do try), know that Tanglewood’s 75th celebration will be available to a worldwide audience through a series of special broadcasts. Details will be announced later this year. Watch for them on the website.

For a lot of folks, given this line up, Tanglewood baseball at Fenway Park – even up here in Boston Red Sox country. The contest isn’t even remotely close.
