When we talk about ‘airport slots’, we’re usually talking about takeoff and landing slots, but here’s a decidedly different take on the term: A state legislator in Maryland has introduced a measure that would bring slot machines to Baltimore/Washington Airport (BWI).
It’s far from a done deal. Before anyone will hear the clinking of change, the Maryland constitution would have to be amended to allow the slots.
Discount airline Southwest is the major player at BWI, and spokeswoman Brandy King tells Cheapflights the carrier doesn’t yet have a position on the proposal. “We’re still studying the bill,” she says.
Airport gambling isn’t new, of course. Slot machines dominate the landscape at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (LAS). Flyers can sit right across from their gate, feeding quarters in ravenous slots until their flight’s called.
