When the folks at Skytrax (Web site: www.skytraxresearch.com) speak, the rest of the aviation industry pays very, very close attention. And the UK-based independent survey organization says San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the Best Airport in North America, based on passenger surveys.

Lots of things contribute to SFO’s top dog status. Over the past year SFO has added neat new places to shop and some sublime amenities – high-tech stores, and a couple of full-service spas. Then there’s the music. No mere canned tunes dribbling down from the ceiling. At SFO there are real, live performances. The “You Are Hear” summertime series is a wondrous thing to wash away the angst of security lines.

The World Airport Survey is conducted each year by Skytrax. It encompasses more than 8.2 million questionnaires completed by passengers across the globe over a ten-year period. Included in the poll are more than 40 categories. Among the things Skytrax looks at are terminal cleanliness, staff efficiency, staff courtesy, terminal signage, security processing, immigration and customs, walking distances, shopping, dining, and Internet access.
