The City by the Bay is gearing up for some big festivals around the city next month. From chocolate to opera, there’s something for everyone to celebrate come September in San Francisco. Here’s a look at the top festivals worth a fall getaway to San Francisco.

San Francisco Fringe Festival, Sept. 6-21

Downtown San Francisco’s EXIT Theatreplex becomes center stage for this two-week performing arts festival, which includes everything from dramatic plays to sketch comedy acts by performers from around the country. Tickets are $10 per show or $75 for a 10-show Frequent Fringer pass.

Ghirardelli Square Chocolate Festival, Sept. 14-15

Who doesn’t love a festival dedicated to chocolate? The acclaimed chocolate manufacturer hosts its sweet annual celebration on Sept. 14 and 15, when local dessert companies join Ghirardelli to sample all sorts of decadent desserts and treats. Chef demos and an ice cream eating contest round out the weekend.

Autumn Moon Festival, Sept. 14-15

The traditional Mid-Autumn Harvest Festival is celebrated in the streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown every September with fanciful parades, traditional dancing, live entertainment and Taiko drumming. Feast on moon cakes as you stroll through the street bazaar that overtakes Grant Street during the festival.

Oktoberfest by the Bay, Sept. 20-22

Germany’s beloved beer festival comes to San Francisco during Oktoberfest by the Bay, which features German beer, food and dancing. The 21-piece Chico Bavarian Band will headline during the weekend with live music.

Polk Street Blues Festival, Sept. 21-22

Upper Polk Street erupts with the soothing sounds of blues and jazz during this free annual festival. Two stages of music, café seating, gourmet food vendors and a family-friendly atmosphere set the mood for this blues fest.

San Francisco Opera in the Park, Sept. 8

Sure, you could watch the San Francisco Opera in a grand theater, but why when you can catch them performing with the Golden Gate Bridge as their backdrop during the annual San Francisco Opera in the Park performance? The concert is held at the beautiful Golden Gate Park, so be sure to pack your picnic basket and lawn chairs for this free event.
