Mineta San Jose International Airport’s venerable Terminal C is coming down – the north end at least. It’s making way for construction of anew facility at the South Bay airport – Terminal B.

The work is part of a $1.3 billion program to replace or renovate virtually everything at SJC – terminals, roadways, and parking. Look for B to be up and running by the middle of 2010. When that happens, the rest of Terminal C will come down. That’s so construction crews can complete the final section of San Jose’s new terminal roadway. There are lots of infrastructural changes afoot at the airport. In addition to a brand-new Terminal B, look for:

– An expanded and updated Terminal A later this year. SJC says the set-up will offer larger waiting areas, and, the real bonus, faster security;

– A new 3,350-space rental car area and parking garage across the street from Terminal B;

– More places to dine, and upgraded eats;

– More places to shop;

– Easier roadway access to the airport.

San Jose officials hope all of this will happen by mid-2010. San Jose flyers could use the boost. American Airlines pulled its nonstop San Jose–Tokyo Narita service in October 2006. New facilities may not bring it back, but they can put the South Bay airport in a position to better compete with West Bay rival San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and burgeoning East Bay contender Oakland International (OAK) for more air service.
