When it comes to summer getaways, oceanside retreats like Cape Cod, Myrtle Beach or Catalina Island often top the list — but not this year. According to a recent “USA Today” Readers’ Choice poll, the “it” weekend escape destination this summer is the charming lakeside community of Saugatuck, Mich. With plenty of sand dune-lined beaches, quaint bed and breakfasts and local arts to go around, it’s all too easy to lose yourself to summer in Saugatuck.

Luckily, you don’t have to break the bank to enjoy this Midwestern summer escape. Check out how to enjoy Saugatuck on the cheap.

Stay

One would never imagine staying at a mega resort while relaxing at a lakeside town like Saugatuck; no, these quiet communities are best enjoyed with a stay at a local bed and breakfast. In Saugatuck, book a weekend at The Maplewood Hotel, located downtown in a 19th-century Greek Revival building. Its old-world charm is the perfect fit for a timeless weekend, and the romantic suites, log fires and complimentary patio breakfasts will have you falling in love with this historic boutique hotel in no time.

Eat

A local haunt beloved for its beer selection and casual atmosphere, Phil’s Bar & Grille is something of a local institution. Touting some of the best food you’ll find in town, a seat at the bar at Phil’s won’t put a dent your wallet: most sandwiches and entrees are less than $10.

When a restaurant is surrounded by fields filled with everything from corn and soybeans to blueberries and peaches, you know you’re going to be feasting on the freshest flavors. You’ll find just that 10 minutes outside Saugatuck in the farming community of Fennville, where Salt of the Earth offers an affordable taste of Michigan’s local crops. The farm-to-table menu highlights seasonal offerings, local meats and wood-fired pizzas.

Do

It’s just not a summer getaway if you don’t get out on the water, and the best way to do that in this lakeside town is with a ride aboard the Saugatuck Chain Ferry. Claiming to be the last chain ferry in the country, the Saugatuck Chain Ferry whisks you across the Kalamazoo River to Oval Beach for just $1.

Speaking of Oval Beach, this sand dune-lined shore is Saugatuck’s pride and joy, and you’ll definitely want to spend an afternoon or two enjoying the area’s crystal clear waters and soft sands.

For sweeping views of the Kalamazoo River and surrounding Saugatuck, break out your walking shoes and climb the 282 steps to the top of Mount Baldhead Park, where an overlook lets you see just how beautiful Saugatuck truly is.
