It’s easy to see why America’s earliest elite flocked to Rhode Island as a summer retreat. The country’s smallest state happens to boast more than 400 miles of shore, lined with islands, white-sand beaches and towering cliffs. Centuries later, 18th- and 19th-century mansions still line much of Newport, while historic lighthouses continue to watch over the state’s coast.
