Good news for travelers on Washington DC flights: the Department of Transportation has given the go-ahead to begin work on a new rail link at Washington Dulles International Airport. Transportation secretary Mary Peter announced that she had agreed to federal funding for the extension of the Metrorail line.
She said in a statement: “Through a collaborative effort between local, state, and federal governments and the private sector, I think the project is now stronger, more financially sound and a better deal for commuters and taxpayers.”
The first 11.6 miles of the rail track will run from East Falls Church to Wiehle Avenue in Reston. The second phase, which is 11.5 miles long, will continue to Dulles airport.
It is estimated that the first phase will open in 2013.
