New York flights will soon get a bit easier. News of a move to cut delays at congested Newark Liberty International (EWR) has hit the streets.

While the currently-constituted Department of Transportation’s idea is to impose a “market-based” solution to the chronic delays besetting Newark (EWR), LaGuardia (LGA), and Kennedy (JFK) by auctioning off takeoff and landing slots, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, which opposes the approach, is touting another tack.

In an effort to stem delays at Newark, the Port Authority says an additional $19.75 million for navigational aids has been approved at EWR. According to a statement, the money “will enable more arrivals in inclement weather by improving the ability of aircraft to operate in low-visibility conditions.”

The news will be especially welcome for Continental Airlines flyers. Newark Liberty International is the carrier’s main international gateway.

Over at LaGuardia, the smallest of the three major commercial airports in the metro area, the Port Authority is embarking on a $40 million study to modernize and redevelop LGA’s Central Terminal Building, a facility which handles about half of the pocketport’s 24 million annual passengers.
