Looking to enjoy a day at the beach? While you could bring a couple of beach chairs and spend an afternoon sitting on the sand, there’s a better option for adventurous travelers: horseback riding on the beach. While not all cities permit horses on their shores, we’ve rounded up five beautiful beaches where you can ride horseback along the coast.

Santa Barbara, California

The coastal town of Santa Barbara is known for its Spanish missions and wineries, but its mostly south-facing beaches along the Pacific Ocean are popular summer draws. Through Santa Barbara Adventure Company, you can explore Padaro or Rincon Beach by horseback as you trot along the California coast.

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos is a dreamy destination for those seeking warm weather, white shores and crystal clear, turquoise waters. On the island of Providenciales, you can enjoy the region’s scenic beaches by horseback. Provo Ponies offers a ride along four secluded miles of Long Bay Beach on the eastern shore of the island.

Bradenton, Florida

Bradenton boasts more than 20 miles of beaches, and visitors can make the most of Florida’s coast with a horseback riding tour. Through BeachHorse Experience, you’ll not only ride a horse along the shores of Palma Sola Bay – you’ll swim with your equestrian guide, too.

Phuket, Thailand

The beaches of Phuket may have a reputation for cheap drinks and a party atmosphere, but the warm waters and friendly people of Thailand’s biggest island continue to make Phuket a popular destination for beachcombers. Phuket Riding Club offers horseback rides along Chalong Beach on the south side of the island.

Oregon Coast

Oregon’s coast is dotted with historic lighthouses, dramatic cliffs and sandy dunes. Nehalem Bay State Park is a long stretch of sandy beach set against a backdrop of pine trees and forest, and you can take it all in as you ride horseback on an Oregon Beach Rides tour.
