Many of today’s metropolises have rivers flowing through them, bringing a touch of natural beauty to otherwise urban areas. Waterways that were originally matters of practicality for irrigation and transportation are now things of beauty, often contrasting with the skyscrapers and concrete jungles that have grown around them. Other times, rivers are nature’s centerpiece, carving their way through mountains, fields or forests.

You can spend an afternoon strolling the riverfront in cities like London and France and, here in the U.S., in destinations like Chicago and New York City. Take a visual trip with this photo tour of beautiful rivers from around the world.
