Autumn is perfect for pedaling – country lanes, mountain trails, and (this reporter’s favorite) vast stretches of sun, sea and sand.
Before winter’s icy hands hang your bike on the garage wall for a few months, consider one last fling down in the Florida Keys.
The occasion is something called BubbaFest, a 200-mile bicycle tour from Key West to Key Largo and back again. The route is almost mythic U.S. Highway 1, better known as the Overseas Highway. It gets underway Saturday Nov. 3 and runs through Saturday Nov. 10.
The name Bubba is because the trek is led by biking enthusiast Bubba Barron, a retired police sergeant.
Along the way you’ll traverse 42 bridges, long stretches of open water and compact Keys inhabited by some of the most laid-back folks in the country. BubbaFest is no race. Cyclists pedal along at their own pace, averaging a reasonably manageable 45 miles each day. As you pedal the ocean blue there’s time to stop and snorkel, sail and just revel in the sun. The Keys are replete with plenty of eco-attractions. Swimming with dolphins is a favorite.
Accompanying the expedition are people who can tend what ails you – or your bicycle. In addition to a bike mechanic, there’s a licensed massage therapist. BubbaFest is beautifully thought out.
You’ll be stopping en route at a series of beachside campgrounds. Breakfasts and dinners too are included in the $675-per-rider fee. Also part of the deal are a private open-air trolley tour of historic Key West, a farewell dinner dance and the services of a baggage truck and support vehicle. Hotel and airfare are not included.
