Old clichés die hard, even when they’re totally out of touch with present-day reality. Our vote for Next to Be Abolished is “The Mistake by the Lake”. The tag refers to Cleveland, and it’s just flat-out wrong. Even in wintertime.

There are subtle, sometimes sensuous, pleasures to be found in Cleveland right about now. You can:

Explore the vision, passion and power of Women Who Rock at the city’s most popular draw, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Running through February 26 the exhibition illustrates the critical, creative role women have played in rock – from its inception through to today. The show is interactive, and it’s packed with artifacts, video and listening stations. There’s also a recording booth where you can lay down your own video track, one related to the women in rock.

Peruse horticultural paradise at Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Orchard Mania. The show runs from February 11 through March 25. The weather outside might be frightful, but the hothouse flowers are delicately delightful. The colors, patterns and shapes of this exotic flora are amazing. Look, but don’t touch.

Revel in Rembrandt at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s   Rembrandt in America exhibition. The show is a sublime, revealing, exploration of the Dutch master’s artistry – a rare opportunity for you to see, up close and personal, the imagery he wrought. The beauty is you can do it without having to pay for a transatlantic airline ticket.

Make no mistake, Cleveland may be on the shores of Lake Erie, but the city is ascendant. Just open your eyes.
