Ice hockey in the deep desert? Believe it. The Los Angeles Kings and the Phoenix Coyotes tussle down in Phoenix this week. If you’re shuttling between LAX and PHX to catch the action, break away from your hotel room and the rink and see what the city has to offer.

Here are some ideas:

If the wrong team wins, seek out a bit of comic relief with comedian John Caparulo at Stand Up Live Comedy Theater. Some comedic heavyweights believe in this guy – folks such as Jay Leno, Chelsea Handler and Vince Vaughn. Come see why. His delivery is unique, and his mind as sharp as a cactus.

Break into inner song with some with Broadway’s Best Musicals at Lunch Time Theater. The setting is the Herberger Theater Center. Featured is music from Kiss Me Kate, My Fair Lady, Cabaret, Company, Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray and the smash hit The Book of Mormon.

Too tame? Swing through the vines and let out a scream with Tarzan at the Arizona Broadway Theater. Music and lyrics are by Grammy Award-winning composer Phil Collins. The musical is a faithful adaptation, with Disney overtones.

Something more substantial. Rid yourself of the stereotypes associated with the legendary Geronimo, and Apache culture in general. Come to the Heard Museum and find out who the Native American leader really was. This is as fascinating an insight into the subject as you’re likely to find, and a nice diversion from the frenetic planet we inhabit today.

In search of more? There’s plenty to see and do in and out of doors in the Valley of the Sun. To help get you there, both Southwest Airlines and US Airways offer legions of connections at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
