Airport Overview

Located only 5.8 miles (9.3km) from the city center, Newcastle International Airport (NCL) is easily accessible by train, bus or taxi. It’s currently one of the 15 busiest airports in the UK, with several daily domestic flights to Newcastle Airport arriving from London, Belfast, Southampton and Bristol.

Newcastle itself is a compact, friendly city known its nightlife, music and sport. The city has seen greater domestic and international tourism over the past few years since it regenerated. It is now considered to be a trendy cultural destination, gateway to areas of outstanding natural beauty such as the Pennines and the Northumberland coastline.

The airport has several shops, restaurants and kids’ play areas, and is well equipped.

Terminal Transfer

There’s only one terminal – arrivals is on the ground floor, while departures is on the second.

Getting into Town

Train: The Newcastle Airport Metro station is next to the passenger terminal – just turn left as you exit Arrivals. It’ll take 20–25 minutes to get into the city center and the trains run regularly. Tickets cost £3-£4 depending on whether you want a single, return or unlimited day ticket.

Bus: At less than £2 to the city center, the bus is the most cost-effective option. Buses leave every 20 minutes during the day.

Taxi: Airport Taxis is the official taxi service for Newcastle Airport. A fare to the city costs in the region of £20-£25.

Car Parking

The Express car park is directly opposite the terminal building and costs £1 for 20 minutes, £2.50 for 30 minutes, £4 for 45 minutes and £6 per hour. The short stay car park is next to it and slightly cheaper at £2.50 for 30 minutes and £4.60 for the first hour. It costs £17.50 per day, or less if you book online. If you’re planning on leaving your car for a few days, however, a better bet would be the medium- or long-stay car parks, which are next to each other a little further away (a five-minute walk from the main terminal). The medium-stay park is free for the first 15 minutes, and there’s a courtesy shuttle from the long-stay car park.

Information Desks

There is a 24-hour information desk on the ground floor.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: Bank, ATMs and Travelex currency exchange in the arrivals hall on the ground floor.

Luggage: There are two pre check-in weighing machines that you can use to double-check the weight of your luggage. Travel bags are available from vending machines (£10) if you need to repack anything. There’s also a 24-hour left-luggage facility, a lost-property office, and a free porter service.

Conference and business: There’s a British Airways Lounge for First-Class and Business-Class passengers with a bar, business center, library and TV. The Cheviot Lounge is open to all passengers, although you’ll need to pay to get in – about £16 per adult. Certain credit cards, such as Diners Club, will get you complimentary access. It has free Wi-Fi, a TV, complimentary snacks and drinks, faxes and telephones. The Novotel Newcastle Airport and Britannia Newcastle Airport Hotel have conference facilities.

Other facilities: There are baby-changing facilities before and after security and an arcade game room for older kids. There’s also a 24-hour prayer room on Level 2 of the main terminal building.

Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi in the business lounges. There are also Internet kiosks throughout the terminal building (pay for by credit card).

Shopping: There’s a convenience store and a WHSmith before security, but most shops are in Departures. The selection is small – a toy shop, travel store, newsagent, Boots chemist, fashion and accessories outlet, and a duty-free section with cosmetics, fashion, jewelry, sweets and alcohol.

Food and drink: There’s a Starbucks, a Greggs bakery (with a fair selection of snacks) and a bar in the public area. If you’re looking for something more substantial, the departure lounge has a much better selection – you can go for fine dining at the Caviar House, burgers at Burger King, bistro dining at Cafe Ritazza, or New York-style dining at the Eagle Bar.
