Headed down under for a warm getaway this winter? Don’t miss these seven must-dos in Melbourne.

Queen Victoria Market

Get your proper introduction to Melbourne’s culture at Queen Victoria Market, home to two blocks of market stalls selling everything from knickknacks to gourmet food. You could come to shop, but it’s best to come to eat. Fresh produce, cooking classes and tempting food vendors will satisfy even the pickiest of foodies.

Phillip Island

Less than two hours from Melbourne, Phillip Island is a must-do day trip for anyone who loves wildlife – especially penguins. The island is home to koalas, seals and no shortage of birds, but the true sight to behold is the nightly penguin parade. As the sun sets, the island’s penguins return to their nests from the sea during this “aww”-inducing event.

Melbourne Aquarium

Speaking of penguins, you can see plenty at the Melbourne Aquarium, home to Gentoo and King penguins. And with the incredible sea life surrounding Australia, it only makes sense that Melbourne would be home to such an incredible aquarium.  A 2.2-million liter Oceanarium with various shark species is a shining star at the aquarium, as are experiences like the shark dive and seahorse feedings.

Melbourne Zoo

Australia has long been known for its conservation efforts, and the Melbourne Zoo is a great way to meet the local wildlife, as well as animals from around the world. See local favorites like kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, lemurs and wombats, and don’t miss the Trail of Elephants.

St. Kilda

A trip to Australia isn’t complete without a visit to the beach, and in Melbourne, St. Kilda is your best bet. Beyond the beach, you’ll find the community is bursting with art. Unique cafes, live music, funky boutiques and a Sunday arts and crafts market are just a few of the creative experiences awaiting you.

Yarra Valley

With Victoria’s wine country just an hour away, it makes sense to spend a day or two exploring the wineries and vineyards of Yarra Valley. Chardonnary-lovers will find plenty to indulge in, while everyone can enjoy a hot air balloon ride over Yarra Valley’s vineyards.

Great Ocean Road

For an forgettable road trip, wander along Great Ocean Road. Whether you want to hike, feast on spectacular food and wine or simply soak up the scenic sights, you’ll find it all along this Australian National Heritage-listed highway.
