With more carriers tacking on higher fees for overweight or extra luggage these days, door-to-door delivery of hefty baggage could become – at least for some fliers – relatively attractive.
A company called Luggage Free figures the extra costs will induce you to consider pay a few dollars more to the tab the airlines charge and rid yourself of the hassle of dealing with big bags altogether.
Company president Jeff Boyd is betting the new fees will trigger a backlash, and drive business to his firm and others.
This service doesn’t make much sense if you’re going to carry your luggage on, and put it in the overhead rack. Nor might it be especially cost-effective if you’re making a quick weekend trip and are just lugging along one properly weighted suitcase. Ah, but if you’re on a long vacation, and are packing for it in style, Luggage Free-type options might make sense.
What you pay for is the ability to be more mobile in airports, not wrenching your back hefting bags, and not waiting around a loathsome luggage carrousel with a few hundred of your favorite fellow passengers.
“Airline passengers need to know there are options out there for them,” Boyd says.
