A World War II memorial has returned to Midway Airport in Chicago. Entitled America, the sculpture depicts a U.S. Navy Airman at the Battle of Midway. It has not been on display at the Chicago airport since it was relocated and removed for restoration, the Chicago Sun Times reports.
The almost-life size statue was moved as the Southwest Side airport grew, but wear and tear since its introduction to the Chicago airport in the 1990s began to take its toll.
Around 40 percent of the statue had eroded from visitors touching it, according to the Union League Club of Chicago which arranged the $13,000 restoration.
Following its restoration, the sculpture has been moved to Midway Airport’s A Concourse.
