Without careful planning, a beautiful jewelry collection can turn into a hot mess in your suitcase when you arrive at your destination. Keep your jewelry organized and safe during your next trip with these tips on how to pack jewelry.

What to bring

You’ll have to be selective when it comes to deciding what makes it into the suitcase and what doesn’t. You don’t want to lug around your entire jewelry collection, but you also don’t want to find yourself without the perfect accent piece for a special occasion. You should also be wary of bringing expensive jewelry — especially if you’re going to pack it in your checked bags — in case your luggage is lost or stolen. A few cheap pieces of costume jewelry are much easier to part with than a gold necklace or diamond earrings. Also, try to pick just a few statement pieces and then some pieces that match multiple outfits. This way, you won’t have to pack too much jewelry.

Invest in a case

A good jewelry case can ensure your jewelry isn’t damaged or broken by the time you arrive in your destination. Plenty of department stores offer specialized jewelry cases, such as this LusterLoc Travel Jewelry Case from Nordstrom. Such cases have protected compartments for all types of jewelry, from earrings and necklaces to bracelets and rings. Even if you can’t get a case that’s specifically for jewelry, you can use an eyeglass case or pencil case in a pinch. As long as the case has a hard cover, your jewelry will be protected against tumbles and rough handling.

Get crafty

Plenty of items around the house can help you safely travel with your favorite jewelry. A drinking straw, for example, can prevent kinks in necklaces if you feed the strand through and clasp it around the straw. For larger necklaces, you can use the cardboard from a toilet paper roll. You can also keep earrings organized by piercing them through a piece of card stock, and use sandwich bags to keep everything in one place. If you’re bringing lots of earrings or small pieces, consider storing them in a tackle box or pill organizer to keep from losing anything in transit.
