Enlightened airports across the land have latched on to the realization that flyers love free Wi-Fi. Portland International www.flypdx.com is among those places.

PDX says you can access the service from 70 percent of the airport’s main terminal level. That means most gates, the Oregon Market and food court, and lobby areas near the north and south security checkpoints.

To get into the system you’ll need a laptop, PDA, pocket PC, or cell phone fitted with an 802.11b-capable wireless network card.

Should you be waiting at PDX for someone to arrive from an overseas flight – one from Asia, Europe, or Mexico — there’s an upgraded international arrivals area now too. It’s in the same location, near baggage claim area, carousel number ten. You’ll find new signs, better lighting, and improved seating.
