For the last 11 Fridays, we’ve listed five ‘tweeps’ we think will satisfy your hankering for travel inspiration and wisdom. This time around, we’re shaking things up a bit and taking a break from our usual city focus.
With less than a month before the Olympics Opening Ceremony, we’ve dug up five Twitter feeds that’ll keep you in the know both in the run up to, and throughout, the London 2012 Games.
You can still check out our previous city-oriented Follow Friday blogs. They focus on New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Sydney and Cape Town.
@London2012 – The official Games’ feed is a great place to start. It covers everything Olympics-related, from the sport to the events surrounding the Games. In the lead up to the Opening Ceremony, expect plenty of updates about the Olympic torch relay and the athletic qualifying events. This is the official feed, so forget about any juicy tweets with gossip or problems surrounding the event.
The Olympic Athletes’ Hub – We admit we’re breaking the rules a little here, as the Olympics Athletes’ Hub isn’t strictly a Twitter feed. It aims to pool together the social networking activity of thousands of Olympic athletes in one easily navigable site. The site runs on an opt-in basis and already many of this year’s participants have. Once an athlete has opted in, the hub assigns them a profile page that displays their recent tweets and Facebook status updates. The site’s got a great search function, so it’s easy to find your favorite athletes.
@GAOTG – For those travelling to London for the Games, ‘Get Ahead of the Games’ will be a great help. It’s no secret that parts of London’s transport system will struggle to meet the increased demand during the Olympics. Follow GAOTG to keep up to date with the latest travel hotspots, plan your journeys and discover tips on avoiding huge queues.
@London2012Fest – There’s going to be over 12,000 cultural events and performances taking place across the UK in celebration of the Games. The Festival’s official feed is a great way to discover what’s on.
@owen_g – Owen Gibson is the Olympics Editor for The Guardian newspaper. As one of the leading British journalists covering the event, he has unique insight into every aspect of the Games. Expect the kind of candid commentary on the successes and failures of the Olympics that you won’t find on the official feeds.
