If you’re willing to spend a few more hours en route you can save substantially, especially on overseas flights. Lufthansa’s discount airfares from Boston Logan (BOS) to a trio of European cities is one such example. The carrier is selling each-way seats for as low as $243, exclusive of taxes and fees.

Book and buy no later than October 15. Then, fly out October 16 through December 24; return October 16 through January 23, 2009. There is a blackout period on the discount airfares quoted here, and it’s a substantial one: October 27 through December 11.

These discount airfares are good for off-peak mid-week travel. Most important to remember is this: while the rates are quoted each-way, you have to make a round-trip buy to get them.

Here’s what Lufthansa is offering from Boston to:

Amsterdam $281

London (Heathrow Airport) $243

Paris (Charles De Gaulle Airport) $364
