One of the planet’s busiest airports is also one of its safest. The airport is Dallas/Fort Worth International, and the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) says the Manhattan-sized aerodrome is a world leader in operational safety. Specifically, FSF says a trio of DFW initiatives work to render the megaport a safer place to fly: perimeter taxiways, area navigation, and a surface movement guidance system, all cut the chances of collisions.
The Flight Safety Foundation formally recognized the innovations via its 2007 Airport Safety Award. Dallas/Fort Worth is American Airlines’ prime hub.
Perimeter taxiways are terrific. They allow arriving aircraft to taxi to terminals without having to cross active runways. Saves time for passengers, and angst for pilots and controllers.
DFW’s Area Navigation (RNAV) program is pegged to global positioning satellites. It guides flights along more direct departure routes. That cuts communication congestion.
The megaport’s upgraded surface detection gear helps controllers prevent runway incursions by better keeping track of aircraft and the myriad of airport surface vehicles out there on the tarmac.
Dallas/Fort Worth International—largely because of the presence of American Airlines—is the world’s third busiest airport.
