In an age of ostensible reason, lots of people are consumed by the supernatural. They can’t get enough of it. Be it the Syfy Channel’s Ghost Hunters or the proliferation of ghost tours across the country, folks love to be scared witless.

Okay, we give in. Here are tours that should stir the soul:

Galveston Island was virtually wiped out by a massive hurricane 112 years ago. Do the souls of the victims (as many as 12,000 perished) still linger? Could be. Dash Beardsley’s Ghost Tours of Galveston Island is no throw-together traipse through a graveyard. It’s a thoroughly-researched expedition into the paranormal. Beardsley puts on a quartet of tours, with a fifth set to debut this spring.

Ghosts are a diverse group, although lots of ‘em seem to savor staying in the south. Something about the tradition of it all. Some bill Savannah as “America’s Most Haunted City,” and Ghosts & Gravestones will show you why. The idea is to throw some light on Savannah’s darker side, while not abandoning a healthy sense of humor in the process. Board the Trolley of the Doomed for a one and a half hour journey into the sultry shadows of this classic southern city

While on the subject of classic southern cities, Charleston takes a lower crypt to no town – especially coastal cousin Savannah. Take a Ghost Walking Tour of this genteel city with Tour Charleston. Forays begin at Waterfront Park, and then meander through myriad haunts and habitations. In addition to hearing where the haunts hang out, learn lots about the deeply-rooted superstitions of Charleston’s unique Gullah culture.
