Aquariums are nice, and land-bound sea shows fine – but there’s nothing like whale watching from the prow of a boat on the bounding main. Bowing to demand, folks in and around San Diego are offering whale-watching outings in profusion these days. Here are just a few suggestions, courtesy of the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau.

– Dec. 17, 2012 through April 30, 2013 Next Level Sailing and the Maritime Museum of San Diego will take you out to sea aboard America, an allegiant replica of the historic America’s Cup champ. From her rails spy California Gray Whales as they make their majestic way from the icy waters of Alaska to a far balimer Baja. These sailing excursions last four unforgettable hours and run $65 per adult on weekdays.

– Dec. 26, 2012 through April 14, 2013 Birch Aquarium at Scripps teams up with Flagship Cruises & Events to significantly broaden your formerly beach-bound horizons, this with a pair of 3.5-hour cruises daily. The weekday price for adults: $37.

– The greys are the object of affection for H&M Landing’s seafaring sojourns, trips that operate daily from December through April. Grownups pay $35 each on weekdays, and H&M says they’ll take you out again for free if they can’t spot whales the first time.

– This is comparatively radical: Adventure RIB Rides puts you out on the water in a 25-foot Navy SEAL Rigid Inflatable Boat, manned by a United States Coast Guard-licensed captain. This too is a December through April affair. The fare for this intimate seafaring foray is $85 for adults.

These are just a few of the firms specializing in whale-watching tours. Others include San Diego Whale Watch, Sail San Diego, OEX Dive & Kayak La Jolla, La Jolla Kayak and Hike Bike Kayak (How Does HBK Find More Whales?). Whomever you choose, the point is to get out on the water and revel in the wonders only Mother Nature knows how to bestow.
