There were many airfare sales and flight deals announced this week – our favorite comes from United Airlines, which allows Mileage Plus members to earn miles while they shop. In addition, new routes were announced by AirTran, American and Northwest, while Southwest is making changes to its flight schedule.

American Airlines Vacations is offering customers a chance to earn bonus miles if they book holiday packages and flights to Barbados or St Lucia. Book by December 19.

Discount Airfare: Continental’s Cleveland Flights on Sale
Continental Airlines is offering cheap flights from Cleveland to several U.S. destinations. Sample prices include Cleveland flights to Atlanta for $79.

Shop for Miles: United Offering Bonus Miles at Select Stores
United Airlines has partnered with retailers including Bloomingdales, Macy’s and Sears to offer consumers bonus miles when they shop with their United card. Shoppers will earn a number of miles per $1 spent at select stores across the U.S.

AirTran Schedules Flights to Branson Airport
AirTran is to start daily nonstop services between Branson, Missouri, and Atlanta from next year. The flights, which will operate once daily, will begin May 11 2009.

American Airlines to Launch Daily Non-stop Flights to Madrid
American Airlines is to start daily nonstop flights from Dallas to Madrid. The new services will begin on May 1 2009.

Northwest Airlines Launches Hartford-Amsterdam Flights
Northwest Airlines is to start flights between Hartford and Amsterdam next year. The new flights will begin on June 2 2009.

Southwest Plans Route Cuts, Additions in 2009
Southwest Airlines is making changes to its flight schedule by adding some routes, cutting back on others and terminating some altogether.
