Grow, grow sweet Charlotte. There is good news for fliers frequenting Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT): not only is hub carrier US Airways healthy and growing, the airport is too.

Construction is set to begin this winter on a third parallel runway at CLT, on the far west side of the airport. The move means boosted traffic capacity when work is finished in 2010. That’s because it will be possible to land three aircraft at the same time, in parallel fashion. Better capacity; fewer delays.

And it looks as if more flights are on their way, especially commuter/regional flights. To handle that load Concourse E is getting six additional gates. It now has 26. Plans are for the concourse to expand to 50 gates eventually. The first phase of E’s expansion – the additional six gates – should be up and running this fall.

While work is in progress on the new parallel strip, expect lots of roadway work around Charlotte-Douglas. Foremost among the road projects are the relocation of West Boulevard (North Carolina Highway 160) to south of its present location, and extension of West Blvd. to I-485 and Garrison Road.
