Airport Overview

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is a key airport for central Alabama and serves more than three million passengers per year. The airport is situated just five miles (8km) from downtown Birmingham in Alabama.

The single terminal at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is divided into two concourses: B and C. Concourse C is the only one currently in use at the airport as the other is undergoing a revamp and modernisation project, which started in June 2011.

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport generally serves domestic flights across the United States. Airlines offer flights to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport from cities such as Miami, Houston, Dallas, Detroit, Chicago, New Orleans and Charlotte, as well as many others.

The airport is the perfect gateway into America’s southwestern and southern states and Birmingham itself, and can be used as a base from which to explore Alabama and neighboring regions. With its friendly staff it is also a great introduction to southern hospitality.

Getting into Town

Taxis: Taxis can be found directly after the exit to the terminal. Taxi fares for the short trip into the city center generally range between $12 and $15.

Bus: A number of shuttle companies operate from the airport, including Birmingham Door To Door (tel: (205) 591 5550), eShuttle (tel: (205) 702 4566) and Airport Express (tel: (205) 591 7770).

Car Parking

The free Cell Phone Lot is advisable for drivers waiting to pick up a passenger. It is located on Airline Drive a short distance from the terminal. Drivers can park there for free and wait for a call from the passenger they wish to collect and then drive round to the arrivals exits to pick up their passenger. Short-term parking costs $1 per hour and $24 per day. It is located on level three of the parking deck and is within easy walking distance of the terminal. Medium-stay parking is on levels 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 of the parking garage. Charges start at $1 per hour for the first twelve hours and $12 per day. Long-stay parking is located in the Remote Lot, which is off Airline Drive near University Avenue. Charges start at $1 per hour and go up to $10 per day. The Remote Lot is serviced by an airport shuttle van.

Information Desks

The information desk is located on the ground level of the terminal close to the baggage claim area. Information desk staff is friendly and helpful.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: Two ATMs are located on the upper level next to Concourse C – provided by Regions and Wells Fargo.

Luggage: Lost and found is handled by the staff at the information desk on the ground level near the baggage reclaim area. Porters are also available in this area.

Conference and business: The business center is on the upper level of the terminal. It’s a self-service center and is open from 5am to 9:30pm during the week and until 7pm on weekends. Facilities at the center include copy machines and laptop stations as well as a FedEx drop-off point. The airport’s faxing services are located in the BAA offices of the airport. A Notary Public is also available through the BAA offices. Conference facilities are not available on site, but there are a number of nearby hotels with conference facilities, including a Holiday Inn and Clarion Hotel.

Shopping: Shopping options at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport are limited to a selection of gift shops and a newsagent selling a couple of holiday reads or magazines to take onto the plane with you. All of the shopping options are on the upper level of the terminal.

Food and drink: The restaurants can be found on the upper level of the terminal. Passengers eager for a pre- or post-flight snack can head to Quizno’s Sandwich Shop, Sam Adam’s Toast Birmingham or Starbucks. Mrs Field’s Cookies are always a hit, and Pizza Hut is very popular as is Charley’s Steakery.

Other facilities: A medical assistance center is available at the airport, which also has a paging facility available for locating passengers within the terminal.

Wi-Fi: Accessing the free Wi-Fi inside the terminal is as simple as opening your internet browser and typing in the webpage you’d like to surf.
