Barcelona is a city of stunning architecture, innovative minds, and rich culture. The delicious food and romantic language are the cornerstones of a perfect visit to Spain. Now when you visit, the fun starts as soon as you step off your flight to Barcelona.

This month, Barcelona revealed its $1.7 billion Terminal T1. Designed by Ricardo Bofill, the terminal is shaped like a sword, and is expected to double the airport’s capacity and possibly put Barcelona into the top ten European airports.

Above and beyond necessary comforts, Terminal T1 has taken strides both environmentally and with luxury. Bofill designed the area to environmentally sound, including solar powered water heaters into the integral foundation. He also chose glass walls to let in daylight for natural heat optimization.

In terms of luxury, Terminal T1 seems the ideal place to be stranded on a layover. Equipped with a full-service spa, fitness center and hair salon, it also boasts a long list of retailers and restaurants to explore. And lastly, you can find a place to rest your head in the terminals bed area.

More than 30 million passengers are anticipated to pass through Barcelona’s new terminal every year on its 19 participating airlines. American Airlines, Iberia, and Vueling will be joining that list very soon.
