There’s no mystery as to why really decent airport restraints are emerging all over the country. Airlines, by and large, have gotten out of the business of serving food on board on domestic trips at least in the back of the airplane.

San Diego International, Lindbergh Field will be the site within the next year of a number of new eateries, one of them by Martin Yan, he of the celebrated northern California restaurant Yan Can Cook. San Diego will mark Martin Yan’s first airport location in the country. It’s set to open pre-security, in Terminal 1. That means you and the folks who see you off and sit down together and dine on things such as Kung Pao Chicken, Chinese Chicken Salad, and Veggie Spring Rolls.

Yan Can Cook isn’t the only new entry at SAN. Brioche Doree Café & Bakery will be debuting in Terminal 1 too, in the West Rotunda where Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, and United Airlines are located.

For something fast and familiar Chiles Too! will be opening up pre-security, in Terminal 1’s food court; and Quiznos in Terminal 1’s East Rotunda. That’s the area from which discount airline Southwest operates. A major player at SAN, Southwest serves up terrific fares, and wonderful service, but no meals. That’s why something such as a toasted Quiznos sub shop works so well in this location.
