Plan on parking at San Diego International Airport anytime soon? Know that construction could change where you park.
The lot in front of Terminal 2 is closed now, and will be for some time. The slots that lot used to hold have been moved to a temporary location off McCain Road. The move stems from construction of a new dual-level roadway in front of the terminal. In the long-term that’s good. The road should cut curb-front congestion by separating arriving and departing passengers.
What’s the new temporary lot got? Exactly 1,350 spaces, each selling for $12 per day. To get to the new McCain Road facility follow the green signs arrayed along Harbor Drive. Turn on McCain, and then turn right on Spruance. Once you park there are a couple of ways to get to Terminal 2. You can hoof it (five to ten minutes, depending on your pace) or hop a free shuttle.
San Diego International says it’s “committed to maintaining the same number of parking spaces throughout construction.” Plans are for portions of the now-closed lot to reopen in late 2012. The full parking lot should come back on line in 2013.
In addition to the temporary McCain Road lot, the lots at Terminal 1 and the Commuter Terminal, there are a trio of other parking options located near the airport:
- SAN Park NTC: This is a good option for flyers departing Terminal 2. It too is off McCain Road, and offers 1,000 spaces at $16 per space, per day. There’s free shuttle service.
- SAN Park Pacific Highway: This is the airport’s largest lot, with 2,800 spaces. It’s also the cheapest: $11 per-day. It’s off Pacific Highway just north of Palm Street. It too has free shuttle service.
- SAN Park Harbor Drive: A place to park at this smaller 800-space enclave runs $17 each day. You can find it on westbound Harbor Drive, and there’s free service to the airport.
