Plans to allow a private operator to run Midway International Airport have been backed – tentatively – by several airlines.

Under federal regulations, the airport must gain official approval from five of the seven airlines operating at the airport before seeking privatization.

So far, Southwest, alongside Delta Air Lines, has given its official support to the proposals, with other airlines thought to be behind the plans.

A spokesperson from Frontier Airlines told Chicago business magazine Crain’s that a concrete announcement should be made within the next few weeks.

The Frontier representative confirmed: “We’re leaning toward supporting it, just trying to clarify one or two more issues.”

Continental Airlines claims that the negotiation process is “still ongoing” and officials from AirTran Airways and Northwest have suggested that a final decision will be made “soon”.

If approved, the move will make Midway the first major U.S. airport to opt for privatization.
