While many countries in Asia are known for their street foods, inexpensive markets and impressive temples, an adrenaline-fueled journey awaits those seeking adventure. From cycling through the Chinese countryside to kayaking the Mekong in Cambodia, Asia offers plenty of high-energy outdoor activities. Here are five adventurous experiences to energize your next trip to Asia.

Ride elephants in Thailand

There are many ways to see the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya or explore the jungles of Chiang Mai, but none is quite like seeing Thailand’s treasures from atop an elephant. For a few hours, you’ll connect with one of these majestic creatures as you’re led through ancient ruins or preserved jungle. Some tours also include a stop at a river or lake where you’ll watch an elephant bath.

Hike Mt. Fuji in Japan

Mt. Fuji is high on the bucket list for most tourists visiting Tokyo, but why bus it when you can hike it? Climbing season officially spans two months, from July to August. The best hikes are timed to land you at the summit to catch the sunrise or sunset, and mountain huts offer basic accommodation if you find yourself needing to spend the night on Mt. Fuji. There are four trails to choose from, including the popular Fujiyoshida route and the challenging Gotembaguchi route.

Kayak the Mekong River

While the typical visitor to Cambodia might opt for a cruise to experience the longest river in Southeast Asia, adventure seekers can kayak their way down the Mekong River. Kayaking down the river gives you opportunities for off-the-beaten path adventures, such as watching freshwater dolphins play or meeting locals in villages that have managed to escape the influence of modern society. Most excursions include several days on the water and basic camping at night.

Ride bikes through China

Forget the tourist-trodden Great Wall and rent a bicycle to see another side of China. Riding through the rural countryside will offer a glimpse into another side of China, where farmers tend to their rice fields as untouched mountainsides line your path. Cycling tours are available through destinations like Guangxi, Xi’an and Chengdu. Experienced riders can also arrange their own rides through the country.

Zipline in the Philippines

Looking for a thrill? Then, strap yourself to a cable line and fly through the jungles of the Philippines on a zipline. More than 20 zipline companies operate in the Philippines, offering bird’s eye views of popular destinations like Boracay Island, Davao Gulf and Lake Sebu.
