In the winter South Beach is a welcome retreat from the cold; in the summer it’s a beehive of activity–there’s really never a bad time to start planning a weekend to Miami. And with this quick guide, it’s easy, too:
STAY:
Art deco accommodations abound in South Beach. One of the newer openings, the Fontainebleau Hotel, is a party goer’s paradise: poolside bars, adult-only pools and multi-level nightclubs all on the premises. Rooms sell out fast, though, and average more than $300 a night. For a more affordable option, try the Shelborne where rooms start at $129. The price is a total steal for the Collins Avenue location, which is the main street next to the beach.
EAT:
No trip to Miami is complete without a visit to Jerry’s Famous Deli. The menu has more than 600 options (we recommend the pastrami and corned beef sandwiches) but luckily it’s open 24 hours a day (should you be so inclined as to try more than a few items). Big Pink is another fun diner option, though this one’s a bit more upscale with its vintage decor and outdoor seating. Opt for a hearty salad or burger. For a fancy night out, Joe’s Stone Crab is another Miami mainstay that’s renowned for its – you guessed it – stone crabs. Do get there early as reservations aren’t accepted and the wait-time can get long.
DO:
There’s nothing better than a trip to the actual beach in South Beach. Relax and enjoy the ocean, join a game of volleyball or rent bikes and blades to cruise along the designated paths. Those with a flair for interior decorating will adore Miami’s Design District. Animal lovers must pay a visit to the Zoological Wildlife Foundation to learn about rare and endangered species in a hands-on way — you can book wildlife encounter sessions with animals like tiger cubs and sloths, complete with photo opps! At night, catch a Heat game or a concert at the American Airlines Arena. And if you’re looking for a wild party, clubs like Liv, Mynt and Arkadia won’t disappoint.
