Airline passengers in August had a little easier time getting where they needed to be. The U.S. Department of Transportation said overall, airlines improved their on-time arrival rates in August.

The DOT said 79.7 percent of flights arrived on time in August, an improvement from 78.4 percent the year before and 77.6 percent in July 2009.

What airline was the most on-time? The award goes to Southwest Airlines, with an on-time arrival rate of 82.8 percent. Continental, US Airways, and United also came in above the average of 79.7 percent.

Rounding out the list was Northwest (now part of Delta Air Lines Inc.) and AirTran – both airlines had the lowest on-time rate near 74 percent.
