Next time you fly, prepare yourself for an extra security measure before you board. The frequency of gate screening has increased and may occur unannounced at any time,” says Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Sari Koshetz.

Citing “security considerations,” Koshetz doesn’t say exactly what procedures TSA will use. She does say gate screening “may involve varying number of passengers screened by Transportation Security Officers that could include Behavioral Detection Officers.”

One theory behind the increased searches: the possibility an airport worker could somehow give a weapon to a passenger shortly before they board.

Koshetz will say only, “Gate screening is particularly effective at addressing insider threats, and serves as a random and unpredictable security layer.” She asserts, “TSA continually implements security measures that are easy for passengers to navigate, and hard for terrorists to manipulate.”
