Looking to rent a car for your next trip? Shop around for the best car rental rate Hard on the heels of a reeling economy, the country’s largest car rental company is raising rates.

Hertz just hiked prices at North American airports for retail rentals. Travelers can expect to pay $5 more per day, and $30 extra per week. The raised rates are those not negotiated with corporations.

The rates being raised will affect leisure travelers, and independent business flyers whose companies haven’t negotiated corporate deals.

“We are implementing a retail price increase to move rates closer to last year’s levels,” says Mark P. Frissora, Hertz’s chairman and CEO.

Why the move just now? “Despite aggressive, on-going efficiency initiatives, we nevertheless need a modest price increase to help overcome a difficult operating environment.”

That environment includes higher vehicle depreciation costs, lower used car values, and increased costs in vehicle maintenance and repair. Despite the price rise, Hertz asserts its retail prices are still below winter 2008 levels.
