The Airport Workers United union voted last week to authorize a strike at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the world’s fifth busiest airport.

The union, which represents 2,500 service workers at LAX, is comprised of sky captains, baggage handlers, wheelchair attendants, airplane cleaners and security personnel. According to the Los Angeles Times article, workers are asking for better job training, increased pay and better health benefits, among other things.

The union represents about 5,000 airport service workers including employees at San Jose International Airport, San Francisco International Airport and Oakland International Airport.

The authorization of this union strike comes on the heels of one of the busiest travel weekends at LAX. Airport officials said about 825,000 people traveled through LAX last year during the four-day Labor Day weekend holiday.
