The vehicular bridges at Kansas City International Airport (MCI) have been getting lots of use of late. To keep them up and running, and keep fliers flowing to the airport, it’s time for a makeover. The airport is a focus city for discount airline Southwest, as well as Midwest Airlines’ second-largest connecting city.
Now, the airport is in the midst of a rehab project with the latest phase set to start on Tuesday, April 9. When construction is complete, fliers will feel smoother roadways, and there will be less occasion to close sections of those bridges for repair.
In the meantime, there are some things travelers commuting to and from Kansas City International need to know. Work will continue through July on all six bridges connecting MCI’s three terminals — A, B, and C — to and from International Circle. That means two-lane bridges become one-lane affairs for a while. During peak periods, there might be some delays. You might want to adjust commute time to the airport accordingly, and leave a little earlier.
Shortly after the new Kansas City International Rental Car Facility opens on May 2, work will begin on the Bern Street Bridge over the Berlin Reservoir spillway. That means the spillway bridge itself will be closed to traffic. As this bridge has no ramps, the airport will detour traffic around the area. That will affect traffic to the Marriott Hotel, as well as one entrance to the airport’s Economy Parking area. If you want to get to the Marriott or Economy Parking from west of Cookingham Drive, use Paris Street, then follow the detour signs.
Kansas City International is planning to install signs liberally around the airport property to help folks find their way during all the construction. Keep an eye out.
