To understand the significance of this news you’ve got to understand how important tobacco once was (and, to a degree, still is) to the North Carolina economy. It is from the soil of Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky that the controversial leaf issues. That’s why when Raleigh/Durham International decides to go totally smokeless, it’s major news.

Now, there’s no smoking inside any terminals or buildings owned by the Airport Authority. None. Nowhere.

The no-smoking boundary extends to outdoor areas surrounding airport facilities. Smoking is verboten within 20 feet of airport terminal doorways, and within 50 feet of all other buildings owned by the Airport Authority. That means passengers won’t have to run a gauntlet of cigarette smoke when they enter or leave.

Before the new policy, Raleigh/Durham allowed smoking in designated restaurants on the terminal concourse.
