European carrier KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will return to Detroit Metro Airport later this month with nonstop flights to Amsterdam.

The airline will launch a daily service to the Dutch capital on March 30. This will be in addition to the four daily flights between the two cities already operated by the Northwest/KLM code-share agreement. The new route will be the first time KLM has served Detroit as a stand-alone airline since 2003.

Lester Robinson, Chief Executive of Wayne County Airport Authority, said: “While we consider KLM to have been serving Detroit for the past five years by virtue of its transatlantic joint venture with our hub carrier Northwest Airlines, it’s nonetheless exciting for Detroit to welcome KLM-operated flights back to our region.

“KLM’s new flight will connect Northwest’s largest hub in Detroit and KLM’s largest hub in Amsterdam, providing more options for travelers and strengthening Detroit Metro’s role in the two airlines’ global network.”

KLM will use an Airbus A330-200 on the daily flight to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Departure time from Detroit is 8:45pm, to arrive in the Netherlands at 10:40am (local time).

Return flights leave Amsterdam at 3:20pm and arrive in Detroit at 6:05pm (local times).
