Officials at George Bush Intercontinental Airport are to launch a ten-year renovation project for Terminal B.
Working with Continental Airlines, the Houston Airport System (HAS) will co-fund the $1.2 billion project expected to increase the size of the terminal from 360,000 square feet to 1.7 million.
The extension is in anticipation of further growth at the airport and will include more than 20 additional gates and a new Federal Inspection Services base for use by U.S. Customs.
According to the Houston Chronicle, the renovation plan suggests the possible additional of international flights from Terminal B.
Bill White, Mayor of Houston, told the newspaper: “Houston’s airport system is among the world’s strongest and fastest-growing and this will help us keep it that way. And as we prepare for the future, the city is happy to continue its strong partnership with Continental Airlines.”
Richard Vacar, Director of the HAS, added: “Dramatic growth is fueling this airport and the Terminal B project represents part of our strategic planning and building effort.”
Terminal B is currently used solely by Continental Airlines for Continental Express and ExpressJet services.
