Looking for more than color in your fall foliage forays? The Maine Office of Tourism offers some suggestions. Discover the nifty nooks and crannies of The Pine Tree State and come away with an understanding of the land, the people and the state’s rich history.

Maples and Mountains is a terrific touring loop. It starts out on Route 11. Then it’s on to Naples Causeway on Route 302. The place radiates a boardwalk, early 20th-century ambiance, with turn-of-the-century shops and restaurants. While you’re in Naples, take a voyage on the Songo River Queen. She cruises Long Lake and Brandy Pond. Along the way don’t be surprised when you see moose, deer and such. The Queen makes her runs through the end of September.

From Naples head north on 302 to Bridgton and take on Pleasant Mountain. Hop the Shawnee Peak Ski Resort’s chairlifts and drink in the view of scores of lakes as the sun burnishes their surfaces. From Bridgeton continue on 302 to Route 117. Follow it to West Paris, a town that draws tens of thousands of rock hounds each year. From nearby South Paris continue north on Route 26 to Bethel. If you’re in search of the quintessential New England village, this is it: a classic village green, proud clapboard homes, and folks who are legitimately friendly. The town has some beautiful inns for the booking, and Sunday River Ski Resort lies nearby. Also nearby is Grafton State Park, perfect for looking at lots of leaves and a great place to hike.

There’s a sublime drive along Route 2 to Gilead – and then on 113 through White Mountain National Forest to Evans Notch. It serves up some of the very best foliage vistas in all New England. Try to make the trip mid-week to avoid the traffic.

Make sure you consult the Maine Office of Tourism’s site for directions on how to complete the Maples to Mountains tour. It connects all the dots.
