The weather may not change much down in south Florida: hot and humid fits the forecast most of the year. But the music? Ah, it’s as diverse as it gets. Consider what’s coming up in the near future:
The music of the boy wünderkind will never go out of style, at least not in our lifetime. The annual Mainly Mozart Festival underscores just why. The sound is as fresh and engaging as it was when first written. The Coral Gables Museum is the serene setting for an octet of chamber music concerts – music conceived of by the man himself, his contemporaries and those who succeeded him. The artists performing the repertoire reads like a who’s who of classical music. The festival runs through June 9.
The Golden Age of the piano lives. You’ve just got to know where to look. Look to the Miami International Piano Festival is the venue through May 20 for a slew of international virtuosos, musicians such as Jorge Luis Prats, Ida Haendel, and Francesco Libetta of The Piano of the Impossible fame. This is one of the planet’s premier showcases for piano’s best and brightest performers.
Steep yourself in Haitian music, art and food at Big Night in Little Haiti. That night is tonight, May 18. The Rhythm Foundation and Little Haiti Cultural Center produce the program.
Lose yourself in the passionate, soulful sound of world-acclaimed guitarist Gyorgy Lakatos, a bonafide member of the Gipsy Kings Family. Gypsy Heart is the latest incarnation of the music, and Coconut Grove’s CocoWalk is the venue Saturday, May 19 at 7 p.m.
