The disused Terminal 2 at San Francisco International Airport is to be reopened in 2010.

Airport officials have revealed plans to spend $383 million on the refurbishment of the building.

The old terminal closed in 2000 after almost 50 years in operation to make way for the new International Terminal.

As part of the renovation plans, a new control tower will be built and the main lobby will include more provisions for paperless boarding passes and tickets.

An additional four gates will be added, with Virgin America already confirmed as the first tenant of Terminal 2.

John Martin, Director of SFO, told the San Francisco Chronicle that more airlines are expected to move over during the next two years.

Commenting on the reopening of the terminal, he added: “No airport director wants to have a vacant terminal, and it will be nice to get this open after seven years.”
