Not all the action in Miami and environs is to be had out on sunny beaches. Wonders await in the darkened wings of theaters as well.
Here’s a rundown of some of what’s playing:
- A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings looks at how poverty and greed can harm human beings. At the same time, it celebrates just how redemptive a child’s faith and imagination can really be. At The PlayGround Theatre through May 25, the show is recommended for ages eight and up.
- Death and Harry Houdini is just as gripping for those forever fascinated by the escape artist as those who are new to his story. The show is visually stunning, a careening, entertaining ride through the life of a mythic man. It runs through May 20 at Theater Up Close.
- If all this is still too tame, here’s the ticket: All Night Strut. Playing at Stage Door Theater May 4 through June 10, this is a sassy, consummately classy musical celebration of the 1930’s and 1940’s/ Blues, be-bop, and classics are the fare. The show’s written by the likes of Hoagy Carmichael, Duke Ellington, and George and Ira Gershwin.
- Rev up Becky’s New Car at Actors’ Playhouse. The show runs May 9 through June 3. The age-old muddle of middle-aged longing and regret are fodder for this out-of-control comedy. It’s a laugh-out-loud affair, one that could strike close to home.
Here’s a contrarian suggestion next time south Florida beckons: ditch the beach and explore the great indoors of live theater.
