Behold the equinox, the point-in-time where the Earth’s axis is inclined neither toward nor away from the Sun. All things being equal, it might as well be spring.
Folks across the country are celebrating the spring equinox with particular passion, formally bidding hello to the sun before it turns surly. Here’s some of what’s happening:
On Tuesday, March 20, New Yorkers will partake of a Cross-Park Promenade beginning at East 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue. Along the way they’ll pick up the springtime rhythms of Central Park: the people, the miniature sailboats scurrying about, the insistent sounds of the city muffled by the park’s magnificent trees. The promenade gets underway at 1 p.m.
On Saturday, March 24, the people of Kempton, Pa. will celebrate the spring equinox out at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. There’s a full day of events: a live raptor program, kid’s activities, a guided nature walk among them. The focus here is on return: the annual regeneration of the fauna and flora native to this slice of the Keystone State.
Wednesday March 21 is the day—and London, Ontario the site—of the Birthing Peace Spring Equinox Celebration at The Living Centre. Meditation and ritual are he tools people will employ to increase consciousness of creation’s cycles. Protection, fertility, wisdom, strength and gratitude are the touchstones on this springtime path to peace. The journey starts promptly at 7 p.m.
Finally, culinary California’s take on the equinox focuses on Sur La Table in Carlsbad. A local organic farm provides the produce, and Sur La Table the expertise, as participants cook up tender baby veggies, the first onions of the year and spring chicken. There’s a fee for this class.
What are your plans for celebrating the spring equinox? We’d love to know.
