SXSW (South By Southwest) is nothing less than a cultural phenomenon. The annual gathering in this reporter’s college town of Austin is far more than just another music venue, more than a mere marshalling of like-minded people. It’s film events, interactive IT, and fabulous food. That said, lots of folks flock to the capital of Texas for the tunes.

Here’s a quick look at some of Rolling Stone’s top acts this year:

  • The Boss. Bruce Springsteen performs at SXSW Thursday, March 15. ‘Nuf said.
  • Kimbra. This New Zealand artist is ascendant, fueled by her vocal “Somebody That I Used to Know.”
  • Alabama Shakes. SXSW will be an opportunity for those who have discovered this southcentraic group to get in on something good.

There is a wealth of talent in Texas this week. To better weather all that’s going on, SXSW First-Timer’s Guide suggests that you:

  • Employ the improved SXSW website to better navigate the week.
  • Make a schedule, and try to stick to it. Don’t over-extend yourself. Savor the moment.
  • Dress of the occasion. “You’re going to be doing a lot of walking,” says SXSW’s website. Take along a change of shoes. Your feet will thank you.

Once-upon-a-time, back in the late 60s, there were but two reasons for going to Austin: the University of Texas and state government. That rationale is ancient history now. This is the legitimate Third Coast of the United States – a place where music, high-tech, and Mexican food blend seamlessly. Nothing better illustrates the change than SXSW.
