Airport Overview

Salvador International Airport, officially called Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhaes International Airport, is the gateway to Brazil’s beguiling state of Bahia. A recently upgraded, spotlessly clean mid-sized airport, Salvador International is a good first port of call on any Brazilian adventure.

With its baroque architecture, narrow, winding streets, and celebrated beaches, Salvador is one of Brazil’s premier tourist destinations and it happens to be blessed with a suitably visitor-friendly airport to welcome its guests. Flights to Salvador International Airport are provided by a number of airlines, offering convenient connections to many Brazilian destinations, and 16 international routes as well.

Services and facilities at Salvador International Airport are going to improve more in the next two years, as the airport is scheduled to undergo further improvements in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Terminal Transfer

Not applicable – Salvador International Airport has only one terminal building.

Getting into Town

Bus: Patient souls can try the Ondina public bus service to get them into town. These green-and-white buses run between the city centre and the airport, costing just BRL 6.50 (approximately £2.50). You can buy tickets inside the terminal building, or from the bus conductor: just make sure you take the Praca da Se – Aeroporto route. Bear in mind that this trip can take between 90 minutes and two hours depending on traffic. You’ll be dropped off at the Rodoviaria Bus Terminal (the city’s main bus station, located 3 miles, or about 5km, from the city centre).

Taxis: Taxis are readily available outside the terminal building. Expect to pay about BRL 50 (£19) for the 16-mile (25km) trip into Salvador City, unless travelling at night, when you’ll be charged at least BRL 80 (£30).

Car Parking

The parking garage is located adjacent to the terminal building, and provides short- and long-term parking for 600 cars.

Information Desks

There is a general information desk located near the entrance of the terminal building. There is also a fantastic tourist information desk in the arrivals hall, where you can get good information (including maps and brochures) about things to see and do in Salvador.

Airport Facilities

Money and communications: ATMs are located in the arrivals hall, on the left-hand side (close to the Federal Police office), and Cambio Gradual provides 24-hour foreign exchange services.

Luggage: A (guarded) left-luggage facility and airport lockers are available.

Conference and business: A VIP Lounge is available, as well as a post office should you need to print, copy or fax any important documents. Internet connectivity is available, at a fee.

Other facilities: Nursery and medical facilities, a beauty salon, a pharmacy, tour operators and travel agencies, a shoe-shine service and basic access and facilities for disabled passengers (the airport is scheduled to improve its facilities for disabled passengers by 2014).

Wi-Fi: There is no Wi-Fi at the airport.
