The Birmingham Airport Authority (BAA) has voted to change the name of Birmingham International Airport to Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport after civil rights leader Fred Shuttlesworth.

Authority board members said it will probably be months before travelers begin to see evidence of the new name, The Birmingham News reported.

Al Denson, Chief Executive Officer for the BAA, told the newspaper that details still have to be worked out.

He added that no signs at the airport would be changed until after the Federal Aviation Administration is notified.

“My understanding is that’s just a formality,” Denson said.

Commenting, Kathleen Bergen, spokeswoman for the FAA, told the newspaper that there is no approval process as the FAA simply needs to be informed of the name change so it can be officially changed in documents and records.

Meanwhile, Rev. Shuttlesworth told the newspaper that he was “thankful”. “That’s good. Exciting days,” he said.
